When interviewing a candidate, you want to discern if they really want the job and if they’ll fit well in the position. Therefore, you need to figure out where their passion lies. If it aligns with your goals and mission, you’ll have someone in your corner who loves what they do and will throw their all into the position because their interest will match up with their job…and it’s every candidate’s dream to get paid for doing something they love. So what questions will help you figure that out?

  • When in your life have you been so passionately focused on something that you lost track of everything else? This question will likely get you an honest answer — most candidates can easily talk about something they feel incredibly interested in. It may throw them off track at first, but it’ll force them to think…and the best candidates for the position will talk to you about something that ends up aligning with some aspect of the position. Plus you’ll gain insight into what makes them tick and what sort of intensity you can expect from them in the workplace, as well as where to best place them if it ends up a good match.
  • What’s a significant question in your field you’d like to solve and why? Then follow that up by asking them what they’ve done to help answer the question and listen carefully to the response. If you hear about creative answers and attempts to look at the problem from different approaches, you’ve got the makings of a pretty good worker with tenacity. If you hear generalities or a lot of passing the buck, you probably want to give this person a pass as well.
  • How do you stay up to date in your field? Anyone who truly has passion for the work will view it not just as something to focus on during working hours; they’ll devote time to staying on top of trends and applying innovations to their everyday work. The interested, passionate candidate will see this as an easy question because it’s asking about something they have a deep interest in and want to share. A candidate who can’t give any sort of professional development he’s worked on lately may be one to put aside.

These varied questions will give you the insight you need into figuring out who ranks as a passionate candidate for the particular position and who just wants to fill a slot. Ask the questions that will lead you to the candidates whose passions best match those of you and your team.
