Famed author Mark Twain is most known for his books The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, but Twain was also a humorist with many quotes that offer inspiration. Mark Twain came from humble beginnings, growing up along the Mississippi river in Hannibal, Missouri. He began as an apprentice and went on to work with printers which led to his travels and ultimately, his writing career. Here are a few of Twain’s quotes that also serve as life lessons.
“The secret of getting ahead is getting started.”
The first step towards reaching your goals is, oftentimes, the most difficult one to make. So many people struggle with starting something new due to the fear of starting. However, you can’t move on to better things if you don’t try. Take a cue from Twain. He was someone that embraced newness. In 1857, he became an apprentice steamboat pilot. If Twain could muster up the courage to explore new heights, you can too.
“Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.”
Notice a running theme here? Twain was definitely a person that did not let fear control his life. In fact, his book characters, Tom and Huck, spent the novels running out of one situation into another. The choice of two young boys as main characters makes sense. People associate fearlessness with young men. Youth and vitality are seen as the antidote to fear. What many don’t realize is young people get scared, they just don’t let it cripple them. Your courageousness must be stronger than your fear.
“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”
This quote speaks to Twain’s tenacity. When Twain wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, he was 40 years old. By this time, he had already written for a few newspapers, gotten married and had children. The truth is, it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. Do not let age become a barrier between you and your heart’s desire. It might take some time, but you’ll get there.
